crafting a melody – mad music mondays

Episode 3.

For those just joining, welcome to mad music mondays, where I will be taking you on a journey through my creative process of releasing my first single. Last week’s episode is available here.

I’ve written before about being different on purpose, and when writing a melody, it becomes particularly important. I played around with so many different options, ukulele in hand. I flipped it around, upside-down and inside out, until I settled on something I was reasonably certain I hadn’t heard somewhere else.

Only to really come back to what I had in the beginning.

But I wouldn’t change it. To change an idea, to test it, to retry it in different forms is to test it for its strength. While there are still many things I would change about the final product, there are strong elements that stayed because they couldn’t be replaced by any other idea.

This is one of the most enjoyable stages of writing a song – just you and your instrument, and not too much pressure yet. Enjoy it while it lasts – I did!

The song, ‘you should know’, is about that fleeting, uncomplicated moment of realising that you like someone. The brave among you will send it to your crush (whether or not they know).

If you number among those brave souls, please comment ‘challenge accepted’. Knowing that will bring me great joy.
