Today, I have some little words to share about the musical I’m writing. Big words are all well and good, but I am most excited about sharing little ones, and I want to explain why.
Whenever I start a new project, there is one conversation that I will always struggle to have. It usually starts like this.
‘Oh, you’re writing [insert relevant project here], that’s so cool! What’s it going to be about?’
At which point, I start to flounder.
How to explain this brand-new idea that is taking form in my mind.
How to do that without giving away all the details that I’m still unsure of, while not sounding pretentious by using words that are everyday to me, but sound ridiculous to others.
In short, the conversation doesn’t tend to go well. I don’t have the right words to explain what it is that I am doing.
Over time, this conversation becomes less painful. With practice and thinking and being further along the creative path, the words come more easily.
Which brings me back to the little words that I have to share today. Because I am delighted to say that I have found them, after months of awkward ums and ahs. And because I have found them, I am delighted to share them with you, and to give the first proper update on my musical writing endeavours.
‘Oh, you’re writing a musical, that’s so cool! What’s it going to be about?’
‘The musical I’m writing is the backstory of the fairy godmother from Cinderella.’
Make of that concept what you will.
Happy creating!
